Designing an English Proficiency Test: Assessing A1 to C1 Levels!

As part of my ongoing efforts to enhance language learning and assessment, I recently designed an English proficiency test. This comprehensive test is structured to evaluate learners across five proficiency levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1. With 45 carefully crafted questions and a time limit of 40 minutes, this test aims to accurately measure grammar and reading skills, providing a clear indication of a learner's English proficiency.

Structure and Content of the Test

The test consists of 45 questions, divided evenly between grammar and reading comprehension. The format and content are designed to challenge students appropriately according to their proficiency level.

The reading section focuses on comprehension and the ability to interpret texts. The types of questions include:

- Short Passages: Followed by questions that test understanding of main ideas, details, and inferences.

- Longer Texts: Designed to assess the ability to understand more complex materials and synthesize information.

Scoring and Time Allocation

The test duration is set at 40 minutes, requiring students to manage their time efficiently across both sections. The scoring is straightforward: each correct answer earns one point, and the total score is simply the number of correct answers out of 45. This method ensures clarity and simplicity in assessing students' proficiency.

Objectives and Benefits

The primary objective of this test is to provide a reliable measure of English language proficiency across different levels. Here are some key benefits:

- Comprehensive Assessment: By covering a wide range of proficiency levels, the test can accommodate learners at different stages of their language learning journey.

- Focused Skills Measurement: Concentrating on grammar and reading ensures that the test evaluates crucial components of language proficiency.

- Time Management Practice: The 40-minute time limit helps students practice managing their time effectively during exams.

Preparing for the Test

To ensure success, students should focus on both grammar and reading practice. Here are some tips:

- Grammar Practice: Regularly review grammar rules and complete practice exercises. Resources like grammar workbooks and online exercises can be very helpful.

- Reading Comprehension: Read a variety of texts, such as articles, short stories, and essays. Practice summarizing the main ideas and answering comprehension questions.

Designing this English proficiency test was a rewarding experience, aimed at providing a valuable tool for both learners and educators. By accurately measuring grammar and reading skills across various proficiency levels, the test offers insightful data on students' language abilities. I look forward to seeing how this test can contribute to more effective language learning and assessment.

I wish I could include listening, speaking, and writing skills in the test. However, my goal was to reach a larger audience and create a high-quality placement test that would save time and resources for the test makers and takers.

Engaging Teenagers in English Learning: Vampires and Werewolves Activity Sheets

In our Exam Preparation course for English teaching, we were tasked with creating activity sheets focused on two different skills. I chose to design activities that targeted listening and reading skills, using the intriguing topics of vampires and werewolves to capture the interest of teenage learners. The texts and activities were tailored to be suitable for B1 level students, ensuring an engaging and educational experience.

Choosing the Topics: Vampires and Werewolves

When it comes to engaging teenagers, selecting topics that resonate with their interests is crucial. Vampires and werewolves are themes that have always fascinated young audiences, thanks to popular books, movies, and TV shows. By incorporating these elements into the activity sheets, I aimed to make the learning process enjoyable and captivating.

Designing the Activities

1. Listening Activities

For the listening component, I provided audio transcriptions that featured short dialogues involving vampires and werewolves. This activities involved listening to conversations between characters discussing vampires or werewolves, followed by comprehension questions to test their understanding and to assess listening comprehension.

2. Reading Activities

The reading activities were designed to enhance students' reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. The activities included:

   - Text Analysis: Students read passages about the history and folklore of vampires and werewolves. After reading, they answered questions that tested their ability to extract key information and infer meanings from the context.

   - Vocabulary Exercises: These exercises focused on new and challenging words found in the texts. Students matched words with their definitions and used them in sentences to reinforce their understanding.

Structuring the Activity Sheets

Each activity sheet was carefully structured to ensure clarity and ease of use. Here’s how they were organized:

1. Introduction: A brief introduction to the topic to spark interest and provide background information.

2. Pre-Activity Questions: Questions to activate prior knowledge and prepare students for the listening or reading task.

3. Main Activity: The core listening or reading exercise, followed by comprehension questions.

4. Post-Activity Discussion: Prompts for students to discuss the topic and share their thoughts, encouraging interactive learning.

5. Vocabulary Practice: Exercises to reinforce new vocabulary introduced in the texts.

Benefits of Using Themed Activity Sheets

Integrating themes like vampires and werewolves into English learning has several benefits:

- Increased Engagement: Topics that interest students make them more likely to participate actively and enjoy the learning process.

- Contextual Learning: Themed activities provide a context for language use, helping students understand and remember new words and concepts.

- Skill Integration: Combining listening and reading skills in themed activities offers a holistic approach to language learning.

In conclusion, creating activity sheets that focus on listening and reading skills using the captivating themes of vampires and werewolves was an exciting and rewarding project. By aligning the content with the interests of teenage learners and ensuring it was appropriate for the B1 level, I was able to design educational materials that are both engaging and effective.

As educators, it’s essential to continuously explore creative ways to make learning enjoyable and relevant. I look forward to developing more themed activities that inspire and motivate students in their language learning journey.

My Virtual Exchange Experience!

We as Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa ELT students had a 4-week collaboration project with the students of Complutense University of Madrid. We (Gülsüm and I) met Spanish friends Andrea, Maria, Kathrine and Filiove through Zoom.

It was the first time for me to speak with foreigners, so I was really excited. It was a great opportunity for us to speak English and learn from other cultures like how is their educational system and what kind of people they are.

They were really nice girls, they listened us, they participated in discussions and gave suggestions. I really liked them.

I was the host for the Zoom sessions, and I've experinced what it is like to be a teacher. Since I've started all the meetings and I was always the one who said: "Well... then should we finish it?" when I read the mood of our friends.

Throughout the sessions there were some awkward moments such as sudden silences at the start and at the end of sessions. In those times we tried to sum up everything. Therefore, it was a project that make me realize  my weak points and strong points.

Here is the link to our final product: Intercultural Picture Book: GÖKALP

That's all. See you 👋👋👋

First you should select an avatar and make some adjustments according to your preference. You can change even the tiny detail of the avatar.

Here is my avatar:

She looks like she just had a plastic surgery but other than that it is okay :)

It looks like a game but you can use it for a variety of purposes. You can write a scenario and you can record it while you are playing. With this way, you can create an animation.

Other than that, there is an Erasmus Island which Istanbul University have created. Erasmus students can get information and even Turkish lessons from there.

In short, Second Life allows you to experience a virtual world similar to real one.
